African American Beauty and Skincare

African American Beauty and Skincare:

Now that you are well informed about the colors to apply for your particular skin tone, you need to know your skin type in order to properly clean your skin before you actually apply any makeup. Over the many years of applying makeup, when we ask what skin care products they use, we often hear,” Well I wash my face with whatever soap is in the shower, and sometimes throw on a little moisturizer”. Such skin, abused by harsh body soap and starving for moisture, will have a sponge like affect on the foundation, leaving it thick and cakey looking.

The general principles of African American beauty and skincare is show good common sense. A black woman can have more than one skin type. For instance, you may have a basic skin type that is altered by outside factors. Many women find that there are seasonal or other reasons for their skin type to change. Their skin may become dryer or oilier, or may be more sensitive than usual, based on whether it is spring/summer or fall/winter.

These effects are particularly noticeable on black skin because black skin is beautifully so, but deceptive. The amount of melanin and carotene in black skin will often cause light to reflect off, or appear to, rather than to be absorbed, as it is on much lighter or on white skin. If there is any perspiration on the nose or chin, the center of a black face may appear shiny. This shiny quality gives the impression that the skin is oily, when actually it may not be. In fact, the skin could be dry.

There are five basic categories of skin care products; Cleansers, toners, nourishers, moisturizers and eye area lubricants. We will discuss the 3 main basic skin care regimes for now.

Cleanser:

The cornerstone of your skin care program is cleansing, getting your face deep down clean but without stripping it of its essential oils. Select a cleanser that meets the needs of your type skin, then relax your face, massaging it as described. The cleanser will help remove the outer cells layer and the impurities imbedded in your pores. The cleanser should clean deep but gently. When you find the cleanser you like best, stay with it until you type your skin again, when there might be a need for a change, or if your skin reacts to the product.

Toner:

Your toner will remove any last traces of cleanser and excess oil, temporarily tighten your skin’s surface, and return your skin to it’s normal PH level. Products used for toning the skin, which you may have heard of or have even used yourself, are astringents, refining lotions, and clarifying lotions. As stated before, a toner rinses off any cleanser or soap film on the face. But in our regimen it does even more than that. Its other purpose is to prepare your skin to receive a moisturizer.

Moisturizer:

Moisturizers will not “erase” wrinkles. Moisturizers do different things for different skin types: become a sealer to hold skin moisture in (emollients) and draw moisture from the air to the skin to help keep it lubricated (humectants). If your skin is dry, then your moisturizer will lubricate and protect your face with an oil based mixture which adds necessary oil. If your skin is oily, then your moisturizer will be oil-free, for your skin has all the oil it needs. The moisture will also be water-based, fragrance-free, and dermatologically tested since such skin has a tendency to be sensitive.
