Foundations For Blacks
Black cosmetics companies and general-market manufacturers have researched and developed foundations for blacks in literally hundreds of forms and shades to meet your every color foundation need. Just as an artist prepares a canvas with a special, neutral wash to even out its surface color and imperfections, your face needs foundation to improve skin texture for a flawless, smooth finish and to even out its tones.
Some women avoid foundation because they think it will clog their pores. Ironically, these same women will apply blush and eye shadows directly on their skin, a practice that is far more likely to clog pores. Black skin that looks oily and greasy is not attractive when color is applied. Likewise, dry skin can look dull, sallow, and ashen and will lack a healthy luster without a moist finish. If your skin is very oily and you prefer a finish with no shine or sheen, request a matte make-up foundation. If you have normal to combination skin, you may desire an ultra-smooth semi-matte foundation (a slight shine). If your skin is dry, strive for a moist dewy foundation that will give your skin a natural glow.
When you think you have found the right foundation, consider this very important step. When we say “blending,” that is exactly what we mean: placing the color next to your skin and having it look natural. For example, many women mistakenly apply foundation first to their chin. Instead, they should apply less foundation to the chin so that there is closer harmony with the skin on the neck. You should always blend your foundation downward, with less and less foundation at the chin area. Always blend downward and blend lightly. The downward movement allows for better coverage because of the way facial hairs lie on the skin and hair without streaking… If you use a liquid foundation, place four dots of it on your face, then blend them together.
One mistake many black women make is to put on too much foundation, believing this is the only way to get total coverage. Instead, put one dot on the forehead, one on each cheek, and one on the chin; maybe add one on the tip of the nose (this would be a fifth dot). Use your fingertips and blend the dots into each other, working out to the hairline and jaw line… Once you apply the liquid foundation with your fingertips, however, you can go back over your work with a damp sponge to smooth your foundation to the finish you want.
One word of caution when it applies to foundation, never add water to your foundation to make it more sheer. Water will not only change the chemical balance of your product, but may also add irritating bacteria. If you want sheer coverage, apply your foundation with a dampened cosmetic sponge, or choose a lighter formula.
