Skin Types:
There are five basic skin types, normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive. Skin types are as individual as personalities and are determined by how the skin responds to sun exposure, and its ability to tan. When purchasing skincare products, it is often more practical to choose according to how dry or oily your skin feels.
Normal Skincare Basics:
Normal skin has nothing obviously wrong with it. It is elasticity, hydration and color and feels soft smooth to the touch. Normal skin is something most women strive for. If you have normal skin, you are rare and fortunate, but that doesn’t get you off the hook for skin care. It rarely breaks out and feels comfortable after cleansing, but can change as poor skincare, too much sun, wind or cold exposure take their toll.
Dry Skincare Basics:
Dry skin occurs when the protective barrier of oil in the lower level of the skin starts to break down and water evaporates from the skin into the air. A number of things can destroy this barrier. It can be genetic, central heating and cold temperatures are common causes of dry skin. Dry skin is often characterized by feelings of tightness due to a lack of emollients or oil. Your face probably looks dull, gray and it’s often flaky. It has a fine texture, no visible pores, may be rough and scaly in places and shows lines and wrinkles easily. The problem with dry skin is that it will make you old before your time; not only is it prone to natural wrinkling but UV rays penetrate deeper into dehydrated skin, increasing sun damage. Getting those moisture levels back up is vital to having great looking skin.
Oily Skincare Basics:
Greasy or oily skin is particularly common in teenagers and young adults, but much less so after the age of 35. It is characterized by a shiny appearance, especially on the T-zone which is the forehead, nose and chin. A person with this skin type is more likely to suffer from spots and acne. There are various reasons for oily skin. It is often hormonal, which is why teens are prone or why skin can become oilier before your period. Treating oily skin is a matter of trying to reduce oil production and keeping the pores clean to prevent stretching and oxidation.
Combination Skincare Basics:
There are two forms of combination skin, oily/normal and dry/normal. It is normally a mix of oily skin in the center of the face (T-zone) plus dry or normal on the cheeks. Exactly which areas are affected often changes with age. Outside the oily zone the state of the skin tends to depend a lot on your skincare. Tackling combination skin is therefore a matter of balance.
Sensitive Skincare Basics:
Truly sensitive skin is easily irritated and cannot tolerate cosmetic products. Many women who battle skin sensitivity can be set off by anything from climate changes to stress. Eighty percent of women think they have sensitive skin, though in reality only ten to twenty percent show the true characteristics. The best way to handle sensitive skin is by treating it as though it’s very dry and don’t scrub or exfoliate unless you are certain that the products won’t irritate your skin. Eliminate any unnecessary products from your skincare regime and especially avoid products containing ingredients such as fragrances, colors and preservatives.
